Bio Material

Eggshell Clay & Grass Sheets

San Francisco, California

CCA

2023

Inspired by our animal builders study and precedents, our team proposes to use and explore eggshells as a potential biomaterial used for building construction and grass sheets as the reinforcement layer.

Grass fibers added to Eggshell Clay Mixture help reinforce the clay’s properties as the material shrinks. The grass paper also has the eggshell membrane-like property that goes under the clay. This “membrane” acts as a layer of support, as well as a form of release.

Our objective is to analyze the structural composition of the egg to understand its formation, investigate the chemical properties of eggshells and explore its potential as a biomaterial in building construction, and to conduct structural tests using the eggshell mixture, testing the structural strength of the material but also evaluating differences between parabolic vs hyperbolic structures.

During this exploration, we hope to contribute to reducing waste by using eggshells that are commonly disregarded or used as fertilizers, in construction which promotes sustainable practice and environmental conservation, and to test the stress/ force of the materials.

The chart shown on the right explains the order of operation and our material studies and explorations. We found that corn starch + Sodium Alginate Mixture is the most promising.
